Short history of the
6. SS Gebirgs-Division Nord
The SS-Gebirgsjäger Regiment 12 "Michael Gaißmair" was first formed in Brünn, Bohemia-Moravia, on 12 September 1939 as SS-Totenkopf-Standarte 7, which was effectively a garrison unit for the occupied region. On 27 April 1940, it was sent to Drammen, Norway where it was re-titled the SS-Infanterie Rgt 7 (motorized) on the 27th of February, 1941. The unit handed in its "death‘s head" collar patches for SS runic ones in accordance with its new role as line infantry and transfer to the Waffen-SS. In January of 1942 it would be transitioned into a Gebirgsjäger Regiment, and on 22 October, 1943 it was finally re-numbered SS-Gebirgsjäger Rgt 12. It did not receive its name “Michael Gaißmair” until June 21, 1944. Then, in a simple ceremony the divisional commander of the 6th SS “Nord”, SS-Obergruppenführer Friedrich Wilhelm Krüger, presented the first “Michael Gaißmair“ cuff title to regimental commander SS-Standartenführer Franz Schreiber. Obergruppenführer Kruger also gave a brief speech on the life and deeds of Michael Gaissmair.
